How much should I pay for a mothers ring?
The cost of a personalized mothers ring is mostly dependant upon the gemstones set in the ring. Most retailers and eCommerce sites will allow you to order your family ring with either simulated or genuine gemstones. Often the cost of genuine birth stones is not much more than simulated gem stones, it just depends on the months when the members of your family happen to have been born.
You can compare the cost of simulated versus genuine mother ring birth stones in several sizes for yourself here
- Simulated gemstones: Simulated birth stones are simple. The best quality simulants cost about $5 to $7 each, and the labor for setting each stone is about $15 each. If the ring setting is a good, heavy weight quality in 14K gold, it should cost about $125. Therefore, a gold mother’s ring with three simulated stones should cost about $188. - Genuine gemstones: Genuine birth stones are a complicated affair. The ring setting should remain the same – a good heavy weight setting in 14K gold should cost about $125. And the labor for setting each stone is about $15 each. However, the price of the gemstone is dependant upon the birth month of each child, which can fall into four categories: More about genuine versus simulated birth stones

- Semi-precious: The birth months of January, February, August, November and December fall into the semiprecious category. These stones are primarily quartz. They should cost about $25 each, plus a labor charge for setting of about $15 each. Therefore, a mothers ring with three semi precious stones should average about $245.
- Rare gems: The birth months of March, June and October fall into the rare category of birth stones. A good quality Aquamarine (the March birth stone) sells for about $55 in 4mm size. Alexandrite, the June birth stone, is a particularly rare stone, and can sell for over $500 in a 4mm size. Excellent quality lab-created Alexandrite sells for much less, about $72 in a 4mm size, and has the exact same physical properties and birth stone colors as genuine Alexandrite. Pearl is also considered a birth stone for June, but it is too soft to set in a prong-style gemstone mounting. Pink Tourmaline, the October birth stone, sells for about $40 in a 4mm size. Opal is also considered a birth stone for the month of October, but is too soft and delicate to mount in a prong-style setting alongside other gemstones. All of these stones above should also include about $15 each for setting, plus to cost of your mothers ring or family ring mounting.
- Precious gems: The birth stones for April, May, July and September fall into the precious gem category, and are more expensive. Diamond, the April birth stone can cost about $350 for a 4mm size (equivalent to .25 carat). Emerald, the May birth stone should cost about $225 for a good quality 4mm size. Ruby, the July birth stone should cost about $200 for a good quality 4mm size. The cost of a Ruby can vary greatly with quality. Sapphire, the September birth stone should cost about $125 for a good quality 4mm stone.
- Cabochon gems: The gemstones referred to above are all fully faceted gems. Some mothers rings and family jewelry contain cabachon gemstones, a type of cutting that is rounded at the top and flat at the bottom. In general, cabochon gemstones are considerably less valuable than their faceted counterparts. They are normally of a much lower quality, and they require less labor to cut as well.
